Agile Supply Chain: From Backbone to Competitive Shield
Day 60 Summary: Why SCM mindset is the ultimate key to mastering both corporate operations and personal finance.
After 20 years of deploying ERP and SCM systems across Vietnam, I’ve realized a harsh truth: Businesses don’t fail because they lack capital; they fail because of operational rigidity.
On this 60th day, I reflect on Phase 2 with a different perspective. No longer just a system engineer, I view the supply chain through the lens of a management expert.
1. The Illusion of Cost Optimization
Many Vietnamese CEOs are obsessed with cutting operational costs to the bone. However, in a volatile market, a “lean” supply chain snaps at the first sign of trouble.
“Management is not about finding the cheapest way to do something; it’s about building a system that can withstand errors.”
In ERP, we call this Buffer Management. In Real Estate, it’s liquidity. In Insurance, it’s risk pooling. They all share the same root: Agility.
2. Comparison: Traditional vs. Agile Mindset
| Feature | Traditional Supply Chain | Agile Supply Chain |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Goal | Cost Minimization | Responsiveness |
| Inventory | A Burden (Waste) | Strategic Asset (Buffer) |
| Data Usage | Reactive Reporting | Proactive Real-time Adjustment |
| System | Fragmented, Manual ERP | Integrated, Seamless Data Flow |
3. Real-world Insights from the Field
I once witnessed a major consumer goods distributor in Ho Chi Minh City nearly go bankrupt because their DMS (Distribution Management System) couldn’t keep up with fluctuating fuel prices and labor shortages. They were too focused on Optimization and forgot about Redundancy.
As I transition into personal finance, I apply this exact formula:
- Real Estate: Never sink all capital into a project with high inventory but low liquidity.
- Insurance: This is essentially “outsourcing risk.” Instead of bearing the cost of failure, I transfer it to a third party to protect my Cash Flow.
4. Conclusion for Phase 2
An agile supply chain isn’t just for warehouses or factories. It’s a mindset of flow. If you run a business without a robust ERP to spot Bottlenecks, or invest in assets without an exit strategy, you aren’t managing—you’re gambling.
Next Phase: Digitalize or Die. See you in the deeper dives.
